Community groups in Bristol urged to apply for £50k energy scheme
Community groups in the Bristol area are being urged to apply for their share of a £50,000 grant to boost their energy efficiency.
The Community Chest grant scheme from Western Power Distribution will provide advice and support to enable village halls and community buildings to insulate loft spaces, windows and doors, install energy monitors and low energy lighting and to fit effective heating controls.
The maximum award for each successful group will be £1,000.
Tracy Carr, WPD’s Community Liaison Office, said: “Our community buildings are often the backbone of our towns and villages, supporting a wide range of activities for people of all ages.
“We would encourage all non-profit making community groups to apply for one of the grants to support their local community building, save money and reduce carbon emissions.”
Last year the Community Chest grant scheme awarded £999.70 to Easton Community Centre to upgrade the building’s heating and hot water controls, make the lighting more energy efficient and draught-proof the back door, saving approximately 9.11 tonnes of carbon dioxide

Why Beleve in God?
Everyone of us believes in something, whatever that something may be. It could be a higher power, a spiritual entity, a higher self, a super energy or force or a god. We may not publicly acknowledge this fact but within each of us, there’s that intuition for a spiritual relationship. Human history and civilization bear this undeniable fact through archaeological discoveries, artifacts and writings. At one point in my life, I was like any other person, lost in religious ceremonies without the knowledge whether God really exists. My prayers were words spoken to the air with no real expectation of a reply.

Is Therapy Right For You?
You won’t know until you try it – but working with the ‘wrong’ therapist for probably deter you from ever finding a better one! There is no point in even beginning counselling or psychotherapy if you cannot ‘make use of it’. A competent therapist will be able to assess, very soon, whether you are ‘psychologically available’ or not; and if not they are ethically obliged not to exploit you if the work is unlikely to be of benefit to you.

Doubting the Existence of God
Real religion is way more than giving our intellectual assent to a slew of dogmas. It is more like believing in your son or daughter, or trusting in life or goodness or love. If doubts arise, as they surely will, don’t suppress them. Welcome them; live with them and follow your heart.
How to save money on fuel this winter
SNOW, high winds, and freezing temperatures which we’ve seen this year could leave you dreading your next energy bill. But you could take action now to help pay for it by either by switching suppliers or take advantage of energy saving schemes available in Bristol.
The city-based Centre for Sustainable Energy, CSE, helps people and organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors meet the twin challenges of rising energy costs and climate change. It also flags up opportunities locally to save money and energy. One example is the Bristol Energy Efficiency Scheme open to residents of the City Council only provides free cavity wall and loft insulation to households containing anyone over the age of 60 or in receipt of certain benefits or with a child under 16 living at the property.
For everyone else or where there is 60-150mm of existing loft insulation the measures are heavily discounted. And it’s not just householders as this week CSE announced that community groups in the Midlands, South West and South Wales can apply for grants of up to £1,000 to help reduce energy use. This is thanks to a grant scheme funded by Western Power Distribution and administered by CSE with a total of £50,000 up for grabs. The aim is to help community groups carry out simple but effective energy efficiency improvements in village halls and community buildings after carrying out their own energy audits.
Anna Watts, who is managing the project, said: “A similar WPD scheme ran during 2010-2011 and led to a wide range of measures being installed by village halls, local clubs and churches and even a lobster hatchery.” The types of measures include roof insulation, cavity wall insulation, boiler replacement, new heating controls, double or secondary glazing, draught proofing, energy efficient lighting, lighting sensors and white goods replacement. Applications are accepted from now until the end of April.
MoneySupermarket research found that households are collectively wasting £3.5billion by not switching to better deals. And there are simple steps to get save cash – by getting gas and electricity from one supplier can get you a dual fuel discount. Similarly paying by direct debit and making sure you’re on the cheapest tariff rather than the standard tariff will also save you money.
When the fixed period comes to an end, however, be sure to compare gas and electricity tariffs to get the best deal. Switching your gas and electricity provider is simple and doesn’t involve any physical changes to your property. This means no new pipes or meters and no ‘down-time’ while the switching process takes place. All you have to do is sign-on with the new provider, which will then take care of the switching process on your behalf. To prepare, you simply have to take a meter reading on the day you switch, just in case you disagree with your final bill from the old supplier. And if you want to lower your energy bills as much as possible, you needn’t stop at switching your suppliers as simple steps such as just draught proofing your doors and windows can save you £20 a year!
